How to convert JPEG to PNG

  1. Drop your JPEG file into the box above, or click it to browse your device. You can add several files at once.
  2. Leave the output format on PNG, or switch it if you changed your mind. There is no quality dial because the conversion is lossless.
  3. Download the new PNG file. Each result shows the original size, the new size and the percentage saved.

JPEG and PNG are not interchangeable - they were designed to solve different problems. JPEG and JPG are the same format - only the file extension differs. It is the most widely supported photo format in existence. PNG is a lossless format: it stores every pixel exactly as it was captured, and it is the most reliable web format for transparency. Converting from JPEG to PNG makes sense when you need lossless quality or a transparent background.

JPEG has no transparency to begin with, so the conversion leaves the image fully opaque - switching to PNG does not add an alpha channel that was never there. PNG is lossless, so the converted image keeps every pixel exactly - expect the file to be larger than a JPEG saved at heavy compression.

Everything here runs locally. Your JPEG file is decoded by your own browser and re-encoded by it too - nothing is ever uploaded to a server, which is what makes the tool both fast and private.

Frequently asked questions

Does converting JPEG to PNG reduce quality?
No. PNG is lossless, so every pixel is preserved exactly as it was. The trade-off runs the other way: the PNG file will usually be larger than the JPEG you started with.
Will transparency be preserved in the PNG file?
Yes. PNG supports an alpha channel, so whatever transparency existed in the original JPEG is carried through the conversion.
Can I convert several JPEG files at once?
Yes. Drop as many JPEG files as you like onto the box above; PixSquash converts them all in the browser and gives you a separate download for each one.
Are my JPEG files uploaded anywhere?
No. There is no upload step at all. The conversion happens on your own device using the Canvas API, so your images never leave your computer - which also means it works with sensitive or confidential files.
