How to convert GIF to PNG

  1. Drop your GIF file into the box above, or click it to browse your device. You can add several files at once.
  2. Leave the output format on PNG, or switch it if you changed your mind. There is no quality dial because the conversion is lossless.
  3. Download the new PNG file. Each result shows the original size, the new size and the percentage saved.

GIF and PNG are not interchangeable - they were designed to solve different problems. GIF is a 1987 format limited to a palette of 256 colours. It survives mainly because it can animate. PNG is a lossless format: it stores every pixel exactly as it was captured, and it is the most reliable web format for transparency. Converting from GIF to PNG makes sense when you need lossless quality or a transparent background.

Both GIF and PNG support transparency, so any transparent area in your source file survives the conversion intact. PNG is lossless, so the converted image keeps every pixel exactly - expect the file to be larger than a GIF saved at heavy compression.

Everything here runs locally. Your GIF file is decoded by your own browser and re-encoded by it too - nothing is ever uploaded to a server, which is what makes the tool both fast and private.

Frequently asked questions

Does converting GIF to PNG reduce quality?
No. PNG is lossless, so every pixel is preserved exactly as it was. The trade-off runs the other way: the PNG file will usually be larger than the GIF you started with.
Will transparency be preserved in the PNG file?
Yes. PNG supports an alpha channel, so whatever transparency existed in the original GIF is carried through the conversion.
Can I convert several GIF files at once?
Yes. Drop as many GIF files as you like onto the box above; PixSquash converts them all in the browser and gives you a separate download for each one.
Are my GIF files uploaded anywhere?
No. There is no upload step at all. The conversion happens on your own device using the Canvas API, so your images never leave your computer - which also means it works with sensitive or confidential files.
